Affordable South Africa is a ‘hidden gem’ for international retirees

As the global retiree community continues to seek out destinations that combine natural beauty, affordability and a welcoming, inclusive culture, South Africa is emerging as an increasingly compelling choice.

“With its breathtaking landscapes, diverse cultural heritage, and attractive visa options, SA is increasingly being recognised as a hidden gem for international retirees,” says international relocations expert Leana Nel.

“For a start, this country offers a unique blend of lifestyle benefits rarely found elsewhere. From the sun-drenched beaches of KwaZulu-Natal and the wildlife-rich landscapes of the Lowveld to the cosmopolitan charm of Cape Town and the Winelands, South Africa offers global retirees the chance to enjoy a magnificently varied and fulfilling lifestyle. And secondly, this comes at a fraction of the cost compared to many Western countries.”

She says that with literally millions of Baby Boomers from the northern hemisphere now actively searching for their dream retirement destination, South Africa stands out as one where they can enjoy great weather, great food, friendly people and a healthy, active lifestyle – and where their retirement dollars, pounds or euros go a very long way indeed.

“In fact, we often hear from clients who have retired in SA that they wish they had made the move years earlier, because they have a much better quality of life here than they would ever be able to afford in the UK, Europe or the US, especially if they are mostly reliant on a State pension or monthly social security payout.

“This is easy to understand if you consider that the average social security cheque in the US is currently around $1900 – and that this translates into almost R34 000 in SA, even though the Rand has strengthened against the dollar recently.”

According to Numbeo, the average cost of living in the US is currently almost $1200 a month for a single person, excluding rent. And the average monthly rental for even a one-bedroom apartment outside of the city centre is around $1400.

By comparison, Nel says, Numbeo puts the average cost of living in SA at around R11 000 a month (or about $620) for a single person, and the average monthly rental for a one-bedroom apartment in a decentralised location at around R6600 (or $370).

“In other words, US retirees living in SA can cover the essentials for around $1000 a month and have plenty left over to enjoy life to the full – especially as a couple.”

And the news gets even better for couples who would like to buy and own a home instead of renting. Numbeo shows that while the average cost of an out-of-town apartment in the US is around $1450 per square meter, the same type of home in SA would cost an average of just $774 per square meter.

“But the attractions of life in SA don’t stop there. An important consideration for many of our US clients relocating to SA is that, unlike in South America, Portugal, Thailand or many other popular retirement destinations, they won’t have to learn a new language in SA, because almost everyone can speak English, which is one of the country’s official languages.”

In addition, she says, SA offers excellent private healthcare facilities and services (at a significantly lower cost than in the US) as well as high-speed internet, a world-class banking system, award-winning restaurants and outstanding shopping, sport and leisure amenities.

“For those who prefer the security and privacy of living in a gated community, this country also has some of the finest golf and lifestyle estates in the world, including vineyard estates in the Cape Winelands, equestrian and polo estates, olive producing estates and eco and wildlife estates where residents often find antelope, giraffe, zebra and even elephants on their front lawn.”

Of course there are also many other options for retirees, Nel says, including exclusive over-55 retirement estates in some of the most beautiful locations in SA, and mixed-use developments that offer a convenient blend of luxury apartments, high-end retail outlets and leisure and business facilities in the trendiest city areas.

“What is more, SA’s Retired Person Visa is one of the easiest in the world to obtain and offers a simple and flexible route for those seeking to enjoy their golden years in our warm, welcoming environment. “There is no minimum age requirement, and the visa is valid for four years, with the possibility of applying for permanent residence.

“And the income requirement is a stable monthly income of $2000 from any combination of pension, retirement fund, annuity or other assets, or a net worth of $485 000 or more. You do not have to transfer funds into South Africa unless you wish to do so, but will need to show access or the ability to transfer funds regularly for your own support. “
